Mexico’s Copper Canyon
8 Days, 7 Nights Motorcoach/Rail Tour

Majestic Copper Canyon is a destination like no other! “Barranca del Cobre” is the largest canyon complex in North America, and at 8,000 feet in altitude, the mountains are snow-capped in winter, while the valley remains tropical. This is the home of semi-nomadic cliff-dwellers, the Tarahumara Indians, the least acculturated Amerindians. Experience the most dramatic rail journey in the western hemisphere, a rail line that took 100 years to complete.

Day One: Casa Grande-San Carlos Depart by motorcoach, crossing the border into Mexico at Nogales. From here it is just a short drive to Santa Ana for lunch. Later we’re off to Hermosillo, where we’ll visit the Cathedral and the Government Palace to view the famous murals depicting the history of Sonora. We’ll arrive in San Carlos Bay by sunset, where we’ll check into the Marinaterra Resort for the night. We’ll enjoy a Welcome to Mexico reception hosted by your Tour Director before a delicious dinner with your fellow travelers. (LD)

Day Two: San Carlos After a relaxed breakfast we’ll board a private boat for a scenic cruise on the Sea of Cortes. Keep an eye out for dolphins, seals and possibly whales. Also look for exotic birds, including the blue-footed booby and the great blue heron. Later back on land, we’ll visit a scenic lookout point on our way to the local giant cacti garden. Back at the hotel, lunch is served poolside, then enjoy a free afternoon. Spend the afternoon relaxing or visit the marina shops. Late afternoon we depart for our seaside, sunset dinner. (BLD)

Day Three: Alamos After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll depart for San Carlos. Our journey begins with the Guaymas Pearl Farm, the first of its kind in the Americas, where we will learn about pearl oyster farming, pearl grading and quality selection. Later we’ll travel south through rich grain farm lands, on into the foothills of the Sierra Madre, arriving in charming Alamos. A living museum, the cobblestoned streets of Alamos are lined with beautiful Spanish Colonial mansions. This evening we’ll immerse ourselves in local culture with music and colorful dance in traditional costume. (BLD)

Day Four: El Fuerte After breakfast we’ll enjoy a guided tour though the historic streets of Alamos, visiting fabled mansions. The entire city has been declared a National Historic Landmark. We’ll enjoy lunch at the hotel, then depart for El Fuerte, arriving early afternoon. Later we’ll enjoy dinner and local entertainment at the hotel. (BLD)

Day Five: Posada Barrancas Breakfast is early, then we’ll transfer to the train station, boarding at 8 a.m. for the most spectacular train ride in North America! We’ll enjoy lunch onboard the train, arriving at Posada Barrancas by mid-afternoon. Evening offers a fascinating Tarahumara Indians cultural presentation. (BLD)

Day Six: Posada Barrancas After breakfast we’ll explore Tarahumara Indian arts & crafts, visit the rim of the canyon and enjoy the scenic surroundings. We’ll board the new Copper Canyon Aerial Tramway and descend into the canyon, offering the most spectacular of views. Later we’ll have time for optional activities which include hiking, horseback riding, or just relaxing amidst all this natural beauty. (BLD)

Day Seven: Nuevos-Casa Grandes After breakfast we will transfer by motorcoach to Creel via Oteros Canyon. After lunch in Guerrero, we will descend from the mountains into the Chihuahuan Desert and the city of Nuevo Casas Grandes. Evening offers a Mata Ortiz Pottery Demonstration and a fabulous Farewell Dinner. (BLD)

Day Eight: Casa Grande After breakfast we’ll visit Mexico’s northernmost archeological site at Paquime, where the ancient Grand Chichimeca civilization erected their truncated pyramids and adobe multistory apartments. Later we’ll travel through the plains and cattle country of Chihuahua before reentering the US at Douglas, Arizona, arriving this evening around 7 p.m., filled with memories of our remarkable Copper Canyon Tour.
