When Walter Cluer purchased 1,400 acres of barren desert in 1956, locals thought he was crazy. The property—what is now Bell Road and 19th Ave—was 25 miles from downtown Phoenix and could only be accessed by a poorly maintained dirt road. Certainly no one thought this was a great location for the world-class horse racing track that Cluer dreamed of building. Now in its 62nd season, Turf Paradise is a great destination for a fun-filled afternoon. We’ll arrive early enough to settle into tables with a great view of the track and order lunch on self, before the first race. Gambling is optional of course—just come for the fun. We don’t want anyone going home dressed in a barrel!
