Day One: Arizona to Flagstaff – Lowell Observatory Experience
We’ll leave the Valley heat behind as we head north, enjoying the scenic climb into Flagstaff’s cool mountain air and pine-covered landscapes.
By late morning, we’ll arrive in historic downtown Flagstaff, where we’ll enjoy lunch on self with a variety of local restaurants, cafés, and familiar favorites to choose from. After lunch, take time to explore the charming downtown area—lined with galleries, bookshops, and unique local stores—offering a relaxed introduction to this mountain town’s character and charm.
Later this afternoon, we’ll check into our hotel with time to refresh before a memorable evening ahead.
Tonight, we’ll enjoy a Welcome Dinner, included, at Fat Olives—a local favorite known for its warm, inviting atmosphere and elevated Italian cuisine. Featuring wood-fired pizzas, house-made pastas, and fresh ingredients, it’s a perfect way to begin our evening.
After dinner, we’re off to experience an unforgettable night under Flagstaff’s famously dark skies with a visit to Lowell Observatory—one of the most celebrated observatories in the country and a place where history and discovery come together in a truly inspiring setting.
Founded in 1894, Lowell is where Pluto was first discovered, and it continues to be a working research facility while offering one of the most engaging visitor experiences in astronomy today.
The evening centers around the impressive Marley Foundation Astronomy Discovery Center (ADC)—a three-story, state-of-the-art space designed to bring the universe to life. Highlights include the Universe Theater with its immersive 160-degree screen, the open-air Dark Sky Planetarium with heated seating for a comfortable stargazing experience, the interactive Orbits Curiosity Zone, and the fascinating Stardust Lab.
We’ll also enjoy the Strange New Worlds show—an engaging and visually stunning presentation that explores the search for planets beyond our solar system and the possibility of life beyond Earth. It’s a captivating way to deepen the experience and connect what you’re seeing in the night sky to the latest discoveries in modern astronomy.
With Flagstaff designated as the world’s first International Dark Sky City, the clarity of the night sky here is truly remarkable. Combined with Lowell’s powerful telescopes and knowledgeable staff, this becomes far more than a visit—it’s a chance to experience the universe in a way that’s both accessible and awe-inspiring.
We’re excited to offer this as an overnight experience, allowing you to fully enjoy the magic of Lowell Observatory without feeling rushed. After our time at the observatory, we’ll return to our hotel for a restful evening.
